| MESSAGE FROM FIPA’S CHAIR
In the face of this challenge, I intend to lead this Institution, which has been in existence for six years and has already gone a long way under the efficient leadership of Honourable Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette. We have made progress in understanding political, economic and social issues affecting our hemisphere. This knowledge, as supported by the exchange of information and experiences among FIPA members, will help us defend the interests of the people we represent. This wide-scoped, ongoing effort will allow FIPA to become the future Parliament of the Americas; indeed, this is how it is currently regarded by the Organization of American States and the Summit of the Americas, in recognition of the decisive actions taken to bring a solution to material continental issues. In addition to seeking social and economic development of our peoples and the consolidation of our institutions, FIPA is strongly committed to continental security, especially at a time where the world is troubled by stateless terrorism making headway into the Americas. Moreover, FIPA tries to give more value to and increase the presence of women in our Parliaments and to ameliorate the impact that the external debt has on social conditions and the economy in our continent. FIPA places special emphasis on strengthening regional trade. In this regard, one of its main concerns is the advisability (or not) of creating the Free Trade Area of the Americas. This joint effort provides further value to the actions undertaken by Parliaments in each country in the region, and causes us to become progressively more involved in the integration process of an increasingly-globalized world. Democracy allows us to become familiar with hemispheric issues, and this pooling of efforts by Parliaments results in an outstanding gathering of persons of goodwill working together towards peace and social justice. FIPA’s success may be ascribed to the work of many who advocate for the goals and principles of this organization. Strengthening our actions will call for parliamentarians from all over the Americas to become involved in the discussions, proposing new action areas and striving to find solutions. I personally undertake to further strengthen FIPA, in the understanding that increasing the dialogue among parliamentarians and Parliaments in the Americas will be conducive to our understanding and will reinforce our principles of democracy and integration, which are the essence of our objectives. This effort makes us the backbone of the necessary, so much longed-for Parliament of the Americas. |
