Women in Parliament Share Experiences to Inspire

Thursday, March 8th, 2007 - Group of Women Parliamentarians of the Americas President, Colombian Senator Cecilia Lopez, launches FIPA’s “Women in Parliament Share Experiences to Inspire” project, encouraging greater participation of women in parliament in celebration of International Women’s Day, March 8 th, 2007

Dear Colleagues,

As President of the Group of Women Parliamentarians of the Americas, I invite you to jointly promote the “Sharing Experiences” project and, thus, help strengthen our communication and learn from our experiences in the political arena. This program is intended to turn your experiences into a source of inspiration so that they can be shared with women leaders in our region. This is why we are inviting women parliamentarians of the Americas to submit one page write ups on topics that could be used to inspire, encourage and assist women to become involved in politics.

The FIPA Secretariat will undertake to consolidate all submissions and produce documents to be posted on the FIPA Website and on Virtual Parliament, as well as on an issue of ParlAmericas and the FIPA Newsletter. Memories will be shared with civil society groups and the general public throughout the region in the interest of reaching as many leaders as possible .

As a starting point to help you in better organizing the information when writing, we suggest addressing the following topics:

a) How I came to be a woman parliamentarian
b) Three tips I would give to a woman considering entering politics
c) Why was it worth it? What did I accomplish?

It is extremely important to set this project into motion, so that we can gain a deep understanding of each other and make known our role and our message to the peoples of the Americas. But we need your cooperation for this. We rely on you to ensure the “Sharing Experiences” program will strike a responsive cord and leave a trace on the minds of future leaders of the Americas.

Cecilia López Montaño
President - Group of Women Parliamentarians of the Americas
