| Parliamentarians of the Americas Seek Solutions for the Hemisphere (Valparaíso, Chile) - At the Third Plenary Assembly of FIPA, parliamentarians will consider the principal problems affecting our hemisphere and seek parliamentary solutions. In the presence of the President of FIPA, Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette of Canada, the Speaker of the Senate of Chile, Hernán Larraín, and the Minister of External Relations of that country, Soledad Alvear, the Third Plenary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Forum of the Americas will begin next Thursday, April 1. The meetings will be held in the National Congress of Chile, with parliamentarians from throughout the hemisphere in attendance. Participants will divide into three working groups to come up with strategies for dealing with such issues as terrorism and democracy in the Americas, tax systems and fiscal harmonization, and the process of negotiation for the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). These topics are considered particularly important or urgent for the hemisphere. The purpose of FIPA is to initiate an inter-parliamentary dialogue on areas of interest to the hemisphere as a whole. FIPA parliamentarians share experiences and discuss best practices, working to promote democracy, the rule of law, respect for individual rights and sustainable development through increased dialogue and cooperation. The session will go until Saturday, April 3 and includes expert presentations on each of the subjects under consideration, a meeting of the Executive Committee of FIPA, the election of the new Committee and President, and a meeting of the Group of Women Parliamentarians of the Americas.
